The EPA wants stricter regulations on water quality guidelines that could lead to more beach closures. The current guidelines call for bacteria levels to measure 140 units of bacteria per water sample. The new guidelines would lower that to 60 units of bacteria per water sample. If states decide not to adopt the new guidelines, they risk losing federal grant money that pays for the testing of the water quality at the beaches. The EPA is expected to deliver a decision on the new guidelines by the end of the month.
