The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority said it would return the Sakonnet River Bridge and the Jamestown Bridge to the state and raise the toll on the Newport Bridge if the tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge were not raised by April 1st. The state Senate Finance Committee voted unanimously yesterday to extend the deadline to May 15th. According to the Journal, State Rep. John Edwards of Tiverton is recommending the House Finance Committee should do the same.
The House Finance Committee is reviewing legislation that would provide funding alternatives for roads and bridges. The transportation infrastructure option could raise 1 billion dollars over 10 years according to bill sponsors.
