John F. Kennedy in Newport: Tom Putnam

From 5:30PM to 7:00PM

Using archival materials from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Tom Putnam, the Library’s former director, will lead a conversation about John F. Kennedy and the time he spent in Newport especially during his one thousand days in our nation’s highest office. The talk will include photos and home movies, including his 1953 wedding to Jacqueline Bouvier at St. Mary’s Church, and his days spent in Newport at “Hammersmith Farm” relaxing with family. Vintage news footage will highlight the 1962 America’s Cup viewed by the President and Mrs. Kennedy from aboard USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. along with the November 1961 state visit of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and his daughter Indira Gandhi, when they hosted them in Newport. This 5:30pm program takes place at the Colony House on Washington Square. General admission costs $5 per person, $1 for Newport Historical Society members, active duty and retired military. Reservations strongly encouraged as seating is limited; please RSVP to mdelaire@newporthistory.org or call 401-846-0813 x110. Photo courtesy of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
