When Hurricane Maria swept across Puerto Rico a few months ago it was the third major hurricane to hit an American city, state or territory in short order. Now, months later, most of the island remains in the darkness. Anabel Montalbano, a Rhode Islander who was born and lived in Puerto Rico for several years shares what's she's been hearing from family members, the frustration of the government's response and what has been the flight from Puerto Rico of thousands of people who no longer see a future on the island.

"Evening Gowns and Dancing Slippers" - a life's journey from the depression and households with no hot water, ice boxes, and few automobiles. through a time when each day during World War II, Margaret Riley would pick up her morning Providence Journal or afternoon Evening Bulletin and look at the names on the front page of those who had died in battle, hopeful the list contained no one she knew. she's seen the growth of technology, and social media emerge for many their preferred way of communication. the mother of seven, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of 15, Margaret Riley has experienced life and has much to share. there is a wisdom about this woman, an open heart and love for others and love for life. Margaret, 93, captured much of her life in her book, "Evening gowns and Dancing Slippers." She joins Frank on this episode of The Open Forum.

A Superior Court judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking Warwick teachers from what school officials say is a sick-out. Because of teacher absenteeism, some Warwick elementary schools closed. The issue - the school district and union have been without a contract for two years. The union says the key issue is class size, with many parents siding with the union. We talk about the issue, look at how class size in Rhode Island is the highest of all six New England states, and talk about a recent report that shows most Rhode Island schools are in disrepair, many unable to meet basic needs of warmth, safety, and keeping students and faculty dry.

Alliance Francaise is sponsoring Arilyn's concert Thursday night at the Redwood Library. We're also joined by Fred Schoch, executive director of the Head of the Charles Regatta, a huge rowing Competition that attracts 11,000 rowers from around the world, and 400,000 spectators.

Gov. Raimondo's attack on the media has met with a sharp response from some media outlets... and an apology from the governor. In her remarks, she said she was spending a lot more time with "micro-local media". We're not sure what that means, but today we looked at how the governor or her office has often not responded to media requests, regardless of the size of the media outlet. We also talk PawSox... and about Rhode Island restaurants that are attracting national attention, including a Newport eatery.

If not now.. when? We look at the relationship between campaign contributions and certain politicians' dismissal of any conversation about gun control, in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre. We look at other mass shootings that have been followed by inaction on gun control issues. We also discuss claims of the "Puerto Rican" miracle, that island's recovery, and relate a totally different view from a woman who has yet to be able to make contact with many relatives on the island.

Rick Tivens emerged recently from nearly 50 years in the Mountains, not actually rural mountains but the Berkshires, where he first arrived for an eight-week music program as a 15-year-old and just stayed for nearly half a century. He's resettled now in Pawcatuck, just over the Rhode Island line, and continues to write songs virtually every day. Trained in violin and guitar, Rick's career has taken him from Carnegie Hall, where he performed as a teenager, to the Berkshires, to touring with some of the folk music legendary figures. He shares some music, and stories about Woody and Arlo Gurthrie, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.

Ritchie Price is an educator, a survivor, and among the hidden treasures of Rhode Island's rich musical scene. A former lead trumpet player with the legendary Lionel Hampton played with the Count Basie Orchestra and is often called upon at major events to play his very special version of the National Anthem. He's also a member of the Bugler's Hall of Fame, and on any given day might be found with his trumpet practicing along Providence's waterfront. It was just a few years ago that Ritchie questioned whether he would play another note, battling a server kidney ailment. A successful kidney transplant allowed Ritchie to return to music and the classroom. He recently retired from his teaching position at Portsmouth Middle School.

Members of the English team joined us today, including team captain Garrie Renucci; a former professional soccer player, cyclist, and in 2008 was part of the Everest Rocks team that broke the then world record for the highest ever concert held above base camp and subject of the MTV unplugged documentary and recorded album with Slim Jim Phantom and Mike Peters for LHS charity.
