Citizens Concerned About Casino Gambling held an event at the Elk’s Lodge on Pelham Street Saturday morning. The group is concerned with the impact that the casino will have on local businesses, jobs and the tourist industry. Former Providence Mayor Joseph Paolino and his partners plan to invest $40 Million dollars to transform the current facility into a Monte Carlo Style Casino with the addition of table games, an entertainment center and a health spa. The Daily News reports that Paolino has extended an open invitation to opponents of the casino plans and anyone else who is interested to take a tour of Newport Grand, where he will show them the plan to transform the facility. A majority of statewide and Newport voters must approve Question 1 in November for the table games to be allowed.
