Does Newport have the legal right to reclaim some of the land it sold to the owners of Jai Alai? There are differences in opinion as to whether or not the reverter rights associated with the property deed have expired or not and that question has interim City Manager, Joseph Nicholson Jr., getting a second opinion from a lawyer outside the city. The Daily News reports that the issue is whether the city can buy back about 10 acres of land because the deed on the land stipulates that the property must be “used continuously and exclusively in connection with or as part of a Jai Alai Fronton development and/or Civic Center”. The land is currently being used as the Newport Grand Parking lot.
