Three Newport residents have filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Ralph Mollis alleging the upcoming referendum election is unconstitutional. According to the Daily News, the three claimants are calling on the court to stop the election because the General Assembly passed a law that calls for one statewide referendum on the proposed addition of table games at Newport Grand, but does not provide a separate local referendum in Newport. Attorneys representing both sides will meet on Monday to determine when the initial hearing on the complaint will be held.
