The city of Newport has been added as a defendant in the lawsuit against the Secretary of State that alleges that the upcoming referendum question regarding the expansion of gambling at Newport Grand is unconstitutional. The Daily News reports that the addition of the city as a defendant came at the request of the Judge during the initial conference on the matter because the city will be affected by he outcome of the legal action. According to the Interim City Manager, the city hasn’t taken a position on the constitutionality of the General Assembly’s actions.
