The Newport City Council rejected the “ Municipal Community Agreement” negotiated between the proposed developers of Newport Grand and the city solicitor’s office. The council voted 4-3 against the agreement at their meeting last night at the Pell Elementary School. The agreement would have given the city an additional $1 million dollars in revenue over three years in addition to the increase in share of slot machine revenue called for in the legislation that put the casino question on the ballot in November. In addition to $1 million, it would have guaranteed the city a minimum $1.5 million share starting in July 2018 along with other provisions that included giving Newport residents preference in hiring for new positions at the casino.
