Providence is forgoing plans to build a streetcar system downtown and instead plans to improve its bus line. The 100-million-dollar streetcar system was proposed nearly a decade ago and costs remained a major concern. A city spokesperson says enhancing the bus line would cost about one-fifth of the streetcar proposal. The bus route would start at the Providence Train Station and head through downtown towards the Rhode Island Hospital. Similar to streetcar plans, the buses would get traffic-light priority.
