Rhode Island's attorney general is working with a shredding service to host free shred-a-thons.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin says one of the easiest ways to prevent identity theft is by shredding documents that contain personal information, such as bank statements, bills and credit card offers.
His office is partnering with Doc Shredding Corp. to host 11 shred-a-thon events.
The first will be held Monday morning in Providence, followed by an afternoon event in Lincoln.
Additional events will be held during the week throughout the state, including one at the Middletown Police Station on Valley Road Thursday from noon to 3.
There will also be a collection for non-perishable food items for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank at the events.
There is a limit of two boxes or two large shopping bags of documents.
