Police in Narragansett are investigating the death of a man who was pulled from waters off the southern coast of Rhode Island.

Officers were dispatched to Hazard Rock off Hazard Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday following reports of a person in the water. The unidentified victim was spotted about 200 feet offshore upon their arrival.

Police say an officer swam out to the man, who was found unresponsive. The Narragansett Fire Department deployed a boat to retrieve the officer and victim.

The victim was rushed to South County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hazard Rock has increasingly become known as a dangerous location to police, who warn that the area is restricted. A sign posted on the way to the rocks says, "if in doubt, don't go out."
