A Providence building collapsed during Monday's heavy rain in part due to unpermitted work, according to the city inspector. An effort to unionize at a Rhode Island Starbucks has been unsuccessful.

(Providence, RI) -- Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed is seeking expedited federal funding for the Ocean State which was drenched with flooding this week. Much of RI got doused with about a half-foot of rain from Monday to Wednesday, with some spots coming close to one full foot of precipitation. Reed says the federal government needs to be ready to supplement state and local recovery efforts. The senator says the extent of the damage is still being evaluated.

(Providence, RI) -- There are new details about the Providence building that collapsed during heavy rain on Monday. The Providence Journal reports the industrial building on Dexter Street, which was being renovated into a strip mall, also collapsed because of unpermitted building work on a load-bearing wall. The city has reportedly issued cease-and-desist and stop-work orders to halt any additional unpermitted work. The wall that came down was the main wall of a newly-built dance studio called Thr3e [[ three ]] Live. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the business recover.

(Fall River, MA) -- A Fall River, Massachusetts man is being sentenced to life in prison for murder. Adam Levesque was convicted of brutally beating Lance Correia to death with a hammer in 2018. The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says this was a case of a friend getting killed over drugs. The 42-year-old Levesque will be eligible for parole in 25 years.

(Undated) -- A man from Seekonk, Massachusetts has been killed in a hiking accident in Utah. According to police in Salt Lake City, 22-year-old Kurt Lawson fell in Neffs Canyon near the state capital on Monday. Investigators say Lawson fell about thirty feet, suffered severe head injuries, and died while being transported to the hospital.

(Providence, RI) -- A well-known Rhode Island lawyer has passed. Personal injury attorney Thomas Sparks died on Wednesday, according to his law office, which has multiple locations in Providence and other cities. The firm said in a statement Sparks was a tough advocate for his clients, and that it will continue to channel his tremendous leadership.

(Warwick, RI) -- An effort to unionize the employees of a Starbucks in Warwick has ended in a tie, according to a report from The Boston Globe. The organizer of the effort at the store on Bald Hill Road says that means the store will not be represented by a union. The National Labor Relations Board said this week the updated tally was nine workers in favor, nine against after two ballots on the initial vote in June were challenged.
