From the late 1700s and well into the late 1800s, deer were extinct in Rhode Island. Deer was an important source of meat (venison) for the Narragansetts and their hides were commonly used for clothing. with the change of the landscape from forests to farms, the deer population in southern New England was “nearly eliminated for some time.”
