Rhode Island News Summary

(Undated)  --  Here is the latest news: The Rhode Island Attorney General has determined several Providence police officers used necessary force on a man who died in 2021.  A homicide is being investigated in Little Compton.  Another Warwick school official is facing a drunk-driving charge.

>>No Providence Police Wrongdoing Determined After In-Custody Death

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Attorney General's office has cleared the Providence Police Department for the death of an individual in custody.  Five officers responded to a disturbance in a park on Collyer Street on May 7th, 2021.  They encountered Joseph Ventre of Warwick, who was seen on body cameras tossing and turning on the ground.  The police attempted to place handcuffs on Ventre after rescue crews arrived for everyone's safety.  The 34-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.  The Providence Journal reports the state Medical Examiner's office determined Ventre's passing was the result of the toxic effects of methamphetamine and methadone.

>>East Bay Homicide Case Opened

(Little Compton, RI)  --  A man's death in Little Compton last fall has turned into a homicide investigation.  WPRI-TV reports an autopsy determined that 47-year-old Steven Velozo died from "mechanical asphyxia".  The incident happened on Pottersville Road in October.  The state Attorney General's Office says it is working with the Little Compton Police Department.

>>Toll Gate HS Vice Principal Charged With DUI

(Warwick, RI)  --  Another Warwick school official is facing a DUI charge.  WJAR-TV reports Toll Gate High School vice principal Todd Grimes was arrested in the town of Westerly on February 2nd.  The Warwick superintendent told Channel 10 Grimes still holds the vice principal position, but they would not comment further.  Warwick School Committee member Karen Bachus was also arrested for alleged drunk driving in Warwick last weekend.  She has since issued a public apology.

>>Army Corps Studying Fox Point Hurricane Barrier

(Providence, RI)  --  The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier in Providence is getting a review.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been provided one-million dollars in federal funding to evaluate the current condition of the 57-year-old barrier which spans the Providence River.  The money was secured by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who says the assessment is necessary because of worsening climate threats.

>>Rhode Island Gas Price Average: $3.26

(Undated)  --  The Rhode Island gas price average has fallen to about three-and-a-quarter.  According to Rhode-Island-Gas-Prices-dot-com, the current average in the Ocean State is three dollars, 26 cents, which is a dime less than the price from one month ago.  The national average is currently three dollars, 37 cents.

>>Friars Lose To Huskies, Rams Beaten By Colonials

(Undated)  --  In men's college basketball, Providence lost to UConn on the road Wednesday, 87-to-69.  The Rhode Island Rams fell to George Washington at home last night, 89-to-80.  Next up: PC goes to Georgetown on Sunday, and URI visits Fordham Saturday.
