Providence Offers Free Parking For Holiday Shopping

Parking is free in Providence through the holiday season.  Mayor Jorge Elorza recently announced that shoppers can park at meters in certain districts free of charge for up to two hours.  The two-hour limit will be strictly enforcement, and people who overstay the limit will be ticketed.  Some participating districts include Bradford to Knight streets, Public to Montgomery streets and Rochambeau Avenue to Blackstone Boulevard.  Free parking will continue through January 1st.

Police Release Name Of Stabbing Victim At Providence Bar

Police are releasing the name of the man who was stabbed at a Providence bar.  Jeffrey Diehl was stabbed in the arm at Rock n' Rye Bar early Saturday morning.  Police say Diehl and his friends were involved in an altercation with a group of people wearing leather "biker vests" when the incident turned violent.  The victim doesn't know who the suspect was, and police are combing through surveillance footage to identify the person.  Diehl was briefly hospitalized for his injuries and released.

 

'Dancing Cop' To Return To Providence For Holiday Season

The "Dancing Cop" is back.  Tony Lepore has been hired back on to direct traffic in east Providence through the holiday season.  Starting December 10th, the former patrolman is getting paid two-thousand dollars to dance through the streets while directing cars.  Lepore previously faced backlash from the police department after publicly boycotting a local Dunkin' Donuts.  The move came after an employee at the shop wrote "#blacklivesmatter" on a police officer's cup.  He has called the black lives matter movement terrible, and doesn't regret his actions.

Pregnant Woman Arrested For DUI After Car Accident


A pregnant woman is behind bars stemming from an alcohol-related accident in Providence.  Taja Perry was arrested Saturday night after crashing on Service Road.  The 26-year-old woman is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence, driving without a license and possession of a controlled substance.  Perry is among dozens of other drivers arrested during the holiday weekend crackdown.

Fire Damages Rooftop Of Providence Building

Firefighters are investigating a blaze at one of the tallest buildings in downtown Providence.  Fire crews responded to the Textron Tower yesterday morning after a fire was seen on the rooftop.  A spokesman says the fire did not damage the inside, but they're looking into whether damage was caused to the floors below as a result of the firefighters' hose.  The incident is believed to have been caused by a heating and ventilation system.

Two Brothers Arrested In Gambling Bust

Two Providence brothers are accused of operating an illegal gambling business . Joseph and Richard Tiberi were recently charged with bookmaking, conspiracy and keeping a gambling place.  The two men were recently arrested, stemming from a raid at Decatur Social Club.  Police uncovered bookmaking records and thousands-of-dollars in cash.  The suspects are also accused of associating with the mob.

Police Searching For 4 Robbery Suspects In Providence

Police are looking for a group of people who assaulted and robbed a man at Waterplace Park in downtown Providence.  Police were called to the Amtrak station on Gaspee Street on Sunday after receiving 911 reports about a robbery.  The victim told officers that he was pushed down the stairs, and four men stole his phone and iPod.  The suspects are described as 18 to 20-years-old.  Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call PPD.

Airports To Increase Security Measures Following Paris Attacks

Airports across the U.S. are ramping up security, including T.F. Green Airport in Warwick.  The precautionary measure stems from the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month.  The uptick in screening coupled with the holiday season is expected to create longer and slower lines at airports.  People heading out of town for the holidays are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time.


 

Parents Pushing For More Recess In Rhode Island

A group of Rhode Island parents is pushing for more recess time in schools across the state.  Rhode Island Public Radio reports the group called Parents Across Rhode Island is urging the state's Department of Education to revise its school day length, as well as address the school calendars.  Parents argued that the amount of recess time has also been declining since the education department requested five-and-a-half hours of class time.

 

People Arrested For Robbery, Threatening

Three people are behind bars in connection to a robbery in Central Falls.  Daryn Davis, Keith Isom and a 16-year-old girl were arrested for allegedly threatening a teenager with a gun and stealing the victim's belongings.  Both Davis and Isom are being held without bail until their hearing early next month.  The female suspect is being held at the Rhode Island Training School.

 

Missing Cranston Woman Returns Home Safe

A missing Cranston woman is home safe.  Violet Osmena was found Saturday night after walking away from her home.  The woman has Alzheimer's disease and police believed she might have become lost. 

Volunteers Come Together To Make Care Packages For Troops

Volunteers in Rhode Island are mailing care packages to troops deployed overseas.  The group came together yesterday to make 350 boxes with several items including peanut butter, coffee, games and socks.  Operation Holiday Cheer has been held for 13 years.

New Fire Chief Named In Providence

There's a new fire chief and public safety commissioner in Providence.  Scott Mello was booted from the position, and Steven Pare took on the role yesterday.  A spokesperson says when the department was under Mello's watch, they experienced an increase in firefighters claiming injuries and people calling in sick.  Pare says Mello didn't handle the situation correctly and he will serve as assistant police chief for the department.

Holiday Safety Campaign Starts

Law enforcement agencies in Rhode Island are teaming up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to keep the roads safe.  WPRI reports that MADD's annual Tie One On For Safety campaign encourages drivers to place a ribbon on their vehicles to emphasize the importance of designating a sober driver during the holiday season.  Rhode Island State Police say that deadly accidents are down by eight-percent from this time last year.  Extra patrols will be out in force over the next several weeks to look out for impaired drivers.

Police Investigating Death Of Dog On Highway

Police are continuing to investigate the tragic death of a dog on a Providence highway.  Rhode Island SPCA believes that the animal died after being thrown from a car near Westminster Street late last week.  The suspect is believed to be driving a gray SUV.  RISPCA is offering a 500-dollar reward for information leading to an arrest.

Brown University To Put $100M Towards Race Relations

Brown University is putting 100-million dollars towards addressing diversity and racism on campus.  President Christina Paxson recently announced the ten-year plan, and thanked students for calling attention to the issue.  The plan includes steps aimed at creating a, quote, "inclusive campus community."  Earlier this month, dozens of graduate students came together to demand improvements to race relations.

Bill Clinton Coming To NH To Support Wife Hillary

Bill Clinton will be joining his wife in East Greenwich early next month for a reception in support of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.  A spokesperson announced yesterday that the former President is coming to the Verdi Productions office on December 7th between 9:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.  The event is sponsored by several state lawmakers, including Governor Raimondo.  Contribution levels go to up 27-hundred dollars.

URI Students Return To Courtroom, Released On Bail


Two University of Rhode Island students who are facing assault charges haven't entered a plea.  Barrett Lyons and Michael LeBlanc were arrested last month stemming from a fight at the Chi Phi fraternity house.  According to police, six people were injured and both suspects were kicked off of the football team.  The boys were each released on a five-thousand-dollar bail and ordered not to contact the victims.  They'll return to court early next year.

Former Restaurant Owner Pleads Not Guilty To Bribery

A former sushi restaurant owner is pleading not guilty to bribery charges.  Raymond Hugh is accused of paying ex-House Speaker Gordon Fox ten-thousand dollars in 2008 for a liquor license.  The former Shark Bar and Grille owner was arrested after Fox admitted accepting more than 50-thousand dollars from Hugh.  The suspect has denied the allegations.  If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.  Fox is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for public corruption.

Man Held Without Bail For Allegedly Killing Pregnant Woman

A Cranston man isn't getting out of jail anytime soon stemming from the death of a pregnant woman.  A judge ordered yesterday that Born Smith be held without bail for allegedly killing Aliss Collins.  Collins was found dead in a burning, third-floor apartment late last week.  Police say she died of blunt force trauma, smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.  Smith and Collins had been dating, but it is unknown if the suspect is the father of Collins' unborn child.

Lawmaker Proposes Segregation Camp For Syrian Refugees


At least one Rhode Island lawmaker is proposing a camp to segregate Syrian refugees.  WPRI-TV reports that Senator Elaine Morgan accidentally sent an email to several lawmakers, which implied that refugees should be put into a camp to protect U.S. citizens.  Morgan also wrote that the Muslim religion is centered around, quote, "murder, rape and decapitation," but later said that she mistakenly sent the message before editing it.  Morgan and other state leaders have called on the governor to refuse hosting Syrian refugees following the terrorist attacks in Paris.

Rhode Island Officials Offer Free Help To Smokers

Now is the time to quit smoking in Rhode Island.  The Great American Smokeout today and tomorrow is free to anyone trying to quit cigarettes.  Tobacco treatment specialists will be on hand to offer information and support, along with a two-week supply of nicotine replacements.  Additionally, people can get up to five free phone coaching sessions.  The event is being held in the health department building at Three Capitol Hill from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Red Sox DH Ortiz To Retire After 2016

Next season will apparently be the last in the big leagues for "Big Papi."  Fox Sports reports Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will retire after the 2016 season.  Ortiz turns 40-years-old today.  He's coming off a season in which he hit .273 with 37 home runs and 108 RBI.  Ortiz has spent 13 seasons with Boston after playing his first six years with the Minnesota Twins.  He's won World Series titles with the Red Sox in 2004, 2007 and 2013.  Ortiz is a nine-time All-Star with 503 career home runs and 1,641 RBI.  He's also finished in the top-five of American League MVP voting five times.

Police: Man Dead In Smithfield Car Accident

Police are releasing the name of a man who died in a car accident in Smithfield.  Derek Davis of Massachusetts was killed Monday morning on Route-146.  Davis' car went over a guardrail and struck a pole.  He died at the scene.  No other injuries were reported, and the crash remains under investigation.

Tiverton Town Council Green Lights Casino Plans

The Tiverton Town Council is giving the okay to move forward with casino plans.  On Monday, members voted to ask the General Assembly to put the proposal on the ballot next year.  Town council members said that the voters should decide whether the 75-million-dollar casino should be built in Tiverton.  More than 200 people attended the meeting and discussed several issues including environmental impact and traffic.

More Information About Death Of Pregnant Cranston Woman

Media outlets report that a woman who recently died during a fire in her Cranston home was eight months pregnant.  Aliss Collins' body was recently found at an apartment on Marcy Street.  A fire spokesperson says she didn't suffer any burns during the incident, but both the woman and her unborn child were pronounced dead a short time later.  Police are searching for a man who was seen running from the area after the fire sparked.  As of yesterday afternoon there was no word on what caused her death.

Teenage Male Robs High School Student In Providence

More information is being released about a robbery attempt against a Mount Pleasant High School student in Providence.  Police were called Monday morning after a 16-year-old girl was walking along Metropolitan Street when a young male grabbed her.  The victim told police that the suspect demanded her wallet and other belongings before taking off on foot.  He is believed to be about 17-years-old, five-foot-six, a husky build with stubble on his face.  No additional information has been released.

Police: Man Threatened With Shotgun Over Cigarettes

 Police are searching for four men in Providence who allegedly threatened a victim over a pack of cigarettes.  Police were called Monday to the area of Manton Avenue after Margarito Bermudez-Alvarez reported being robbed by a group with a shotgun.  Bermudez-Alvarez was crossing the street when a group of men in a car pulled up next to him and demanded cigarettes.  The suspects are all believed to be in their 30s, driving a car with tinted windows and no plates.  An investigation is ongoing.

Tuition Freeze In Place At Roger Williams University

Roger Williams University is continuing its tuition freeze through the next academic school year.  School officials recently made the announcement as part of their effort to make college more affordable for everyone.  Undergraduates will continue to pay 29-thousand-dollars.  Costs haven't gone up since 2012.  The tuition freeze is part of a campaign that seeks to combat rising costs, increasing student debt and job-readiness for students.

Providence High School Student Robbed At Gunpoint

Police are looking into reports about a Providence high school student who was robbed at gunpoint.  The teenage girl told police that she was robbed around 7 a.m. yesterday, but didn't report the incident until hours-later.  The incident continues to be under investigation.  As of yesterday afternoon, no description of the suspect had been released.

Cranston Officer Files Formal Claim Against Police Department

A Cranston police officer who says he was tricked into accepting a demotion is now asking for a promotion and hundreds-of-thousands-of-dollars in damages.  Patrolman Matthew Josefson wants to be promoted to sergeant and be reimbursed for loss of salary and emotional distress.  The City Council is siding with Josefson, saying that he was forced to accept a reduction in rank.  However, currently there is no sergeant vacancy with the department.  The 32-year-old man has been with the department for over a decade.

Lawmakers Call On Governor To Not Accept Syrian Refugees

At least two Rhode Island lawmakers are calling on Governor Raimondo to rescind the state's offer to help Syrian refugees.  Doreen Costa took to Twitter to say, quote, "Please re-think welcoming refugees to Rhode Island," and later sent a letter directly to Raimondo.  Robert Nardolillo echoed Costa's calls, also sending a letter to Raimondo saying that Rhode Island isn't immune to terrorist attacks.  The ACLU has since issued a statement of its own expressing deep concerns about the calls from lawmakers.

Police: RI Doctor Dead After Car I-95 Accident

Police are releasing the name of the man involved in a deadly car accident in Warwick.  Steven Peligian of North Kingstown died Sunday night following a rollover crash on I-95.  Peligian, a local doctor, wasn't wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident and died shortly after in the hospital.  A passenger in the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  Police are searching for a second car that might have been involved in the accident.

PARCC Test Scores To Be Announced

Standardized test scores for Rhode Island public school students are expected to be announced this week.  Scores from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers exam will be released on Tuesday, and state officials have already revealed that a majority of students are falling behind in math and English.  In 2020, the test will be used as a high school graduation requirement.

Man Sentenced For Killing Woman In 2012

A Warwick man is spending the rest of his life behind bars in connection with the death of a woman.  James Adams was sentenced late last week to life in prison for killing Mary Grier in 2012.  Prosecutors say Adams met the victim through an escort service and strangled her to death.  Her body was found five days later in the man's garage.  Adams was also convicted of robbing and raping three other women.  He is able to appeal his sentence.

 

Police Investigating House Fire In Cranston; One Dead

Police say that a woman who died in a Cranston house fire may have been murdered.  Aliss Collins died Friday night at a Rhode Island hospital after being found unconscious in a burning home.  Witnesses say that shortly after the blaze started, a person was seen running from the building.  No other injuries were reported, and there's no word as to how the fire started.  An investigation is ongoing.

 

Police: Shooting Reported In Smith Hill, No Arrests

Police are searching for a suspect involved in a shooting in a Providence neighborhood.  9-1-1 reports came in early Saturday morning after shots were heard in the Smith Hill area.  Police say they found two bullet casings through a home's window.  There's no description of the person involved, but they are believed to be driving a Chrysler sedan with tinted windows.  An investigation is ongoing.

Brown University President Issues Statement About Latino Conference


The Brown University president is speaking out after a Dartmouth student said that he was assaulted during a recent conference.  The student was attending the Latinx Ivy League conference and said that he was assaulted by a public safety officer on Saturday morning.  President Christina Paxson wrote a statement apologizing for the, quote, "fear and pain," that the incident has caused.  The student involved said that he was aggressively confronted and that the interaction became physical.  The accused officer has been assigned to desk duties.

Providence New Year's Eve Ball On Sale

Tickets are on sale for the New Year's Eve Ball in Providence.  Mayor Jorge Elorza announced yesterday that tickets for the event can be purchased online.  The celebration will include food and entertainment.  There are only a handful of tickets for sale at 50-dollars each.  It's being held at the Rhode Island Convention Center.  Doors open at 9 p.m. on December 31st.

Police: Two Suspects Steal Items From Lawnmower Store

Police are searching for two people who allegedly stole thousands-of-dollars worth of items from a store in Cranston.  Earlier this week, the two people broke into the American Lawnmower on Byron Street.  Police say the pair stole generators, backpack blowers and hedge trimmers.  One man is described as being heavy set with a ponytail and the other is short and thin.  Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call police.

Police Union Not Backing Officer Marchant's Recent Firing

The police union isn't going to be weighing in on the recent firing of a Providence sergeant.  A spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge number-3 said yesterday that the group won't be taking a position on the administration's decision because they don't "condone" what the officer did.  Last week officer David Marchant was fired after referring to a patrolman as a "black guy" multiple times.

Teenage Boy Charged With Cyberstalking

A Barrington teen is accused of sending inappropriate text messages to young girls.  The 15-year-old student allegedly asked four females to send him naked photos.  He's also accused of making a fake social media profile for one of the victims and posting "unpleasant comments."  Police say the teen admitted to asking for the pictures and is charged with cyberstalking and cyberharassment.  He's a student at Barrington High School, but no names have been released.

Man Kidnaps Girls, Abandons Them At Shopping Market

Police are searching for a man who is accused of kidnapping a couple of young girls in Providence.  Irvin Sanchez accused his female roommate of stealing from him during an argument on Wednesday afternoon.  After the incident, Sanchez allegedly took off with the woman's two young daughters.  The girls were found a short time later at a store on Westminster Street.  Sanchez is believed to be driving a black Volkswagen.  Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to call police.

Man Granted Evidentiary Hearing After Murder Conviction

A man who brutally killed a young Woonsocket girl is heading back to court.  The Rhode Island Supreme Court is approving an evidentiary hearing for Joshua Davis, giving him a chance to reverse his conviction.  Davis was sentenced to life behind bars in 2008 for kidnapping, molesting and killing an eight-year-old girl.  No word as to when he's slated for court.

Group Of Women To Learn About Pay Equity, Safe Transportation

A group of women who are part of the Women's Policy Institute are getting the opportunity to learn more about policy solutions for pay equity and safe transportation.  The class of ten women will focus on how to draft legislation, engage community partners and advocate for their policies.  A spokeswoman says the group is dedicated to upholding equal opportunity rights in Rhode Island.

Congressman Cicilline To Hold Open Office Meetings

People who want to meet with Congressman David Cicilline will have the opportunity to do so this weekend.  Cicilline is holding open office hours this Saturday in Portsmouth and Middletown.  The meetings come as part of an effort to meet with people in all 19 cities in his congressional district.  The first meeting is this Saturday at the Portsmouth Free Public Library from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  He'll also be at Middletown Public Library from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Follow his journey under "hashtag-Reach out 19" on social media.

Police: Searching For Man In Indecent Exposure Case

Police are searching for a person in connection to an indecent exposure case in Pawtucket.  Police posted surveillance photos of the suspect on the PPD Facebook page earlier this week.  Police say the alleged incident took place late last month in a study room at the Pawtucket Public Library.  Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call police.

Man Steals Money From Fundraiser

A Massachusetts man with an office in Providence is accused of stealing money from donors.  Patrick Kane was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stealing five-thousand dollars worth of checks from a fundraiser in 2013.  He recently cashed them after changing the dates.  Kane was I.D.'d from video footage at a bank.  He's expected to be arraigned today.

NBC Weatherman Coming To Providence

Weather anchor Al Roker is coming to Providence.  The NBC "Today Show" weatherman is stopping in Providence today as part of an effort to forecast the weather in all 50 states in just one week.  He'll be stopping at the Providence train station this afternoon before heading out to Boston.  His trek will wrap up Friday in Stamford, Connecticut.  Last year, Roker set a world record after broadcasting for 34 consecutive hours.

3 People Hospitalized After Rollover Crash In Cranston

Three people are hospitalized stemming from a car accident in Cranston.  Police responded to reports of a rollover accident on Route-95 on Tuesday night.  A car changed lanes and hit another car near Route-10, causing one of the victim's cars to flip onto the side of the highway.  Police say the weather may have contributed to the accident.  Three people are hospitalized but their names haven't been released.

Johnson & Wales University Purchases Former Nightclub

A new building is coming to Johnson & Wales University.  The campus recently purchased a former nightclub and parking lot to be used as classrooms or student life services.  The two-story building cost the school one-point-six-million dollars and is within walking distance of other university facilities.  The building formerly housed by Club Karma was the scene of a double shooting last year.

Restaurants To Give Free Meals To Vets Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, and several restaurants in Providence are honoring servicemen and women with free food.  Military vets can come to multiple restaurants in the area to get a free, hot meal.  Some of the participating chains include Outback Steakhouse, Denny's, Applebee's, Chili's, IHOP and Uno Chicago Grill. 

Coventry Girl Located After Two Weeks

Police say a missing Coventry girl has been found.  Sixteen-year-old Veronica Marcano was recently located after disappearing late last month.  A police spokesperson says they aren't able to comment about her whereabouts, but said she is okay and safe.  No additional information has been released.

Man Accused Of Shooting 3 At Bar Arrested In North Carolina

A man wanted in connection to a shooting at a Providence bar is now in custody.  Michael Stokes was arrested at his mother's house in North Carolina on Sunday.  Stokes is accused of shooting three people at El Tiburon Sports Bar last month during an altercation.  The bar's owner announced last week that he plans to lock up the restaurant for good.  Stokes is charged with assault with a firearm.  He'll be transported back to Rhode Island for arraignment later this week.

Student Accused Of Bringing Gun To High School Campus

A Providence high school student is accused of bringing a gun to campus.  Police were called to Hope High School late last week after receiving reports about a gun on the athletic field.  The male student said he was carrying a starter pistol because he had recently been stabbed and needed it for protection.  An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Former RI Councilman Pleads Guilty To Tax, Wire Fraud

A former Providence councilman is pleading guilty to tax and wire fraud charges.  Leon Tejada, who worked for El Centro Multi-servicios, agreed to return nearly 80-thousand dollars to the federal government after being accused of falsifying income tax returns for clients and stealing their money.  Tejada was previously a member of the City Council and serve as a state representative.  He faces up to more than 20 years in prison during sentencing.

 

Race Car Driver Andy Pilgrim Coming To Cranston

A professional race car driver is coming to Cranston to speak about the dangers of distracted driving.  The Cranston Family Center and Triple-A are holding an event at Hugh B. Bain Middle School this Thursday.  Andy Pilgrim, who is a driver for GM Racing's "Team Cadillac," will be leading the speech to discuss distracted driving and other traffic safety topics.  Pilgrim started The Traffic Safety Education Foundation in 2013 and is hoping to bring more awareness to the life-threatening issue.  Doors open at 6 p.m.  Attendees are required to register online.

Man Arrested After Violent Attack On Girlfriend

A Providence man is accused of attacking his girlfriend and threatening her with a machete.  Mario Parris was arrested Saturday morning stemming from an altercation with a 23-year-old woman.  Police say Parris got mad after the couple's infant daughter bumped her head.  The man allegedly punched the woman in the face several times, before picking up a knife and threatening to, quote "cut her and slit her throat."  The victim was also choked and the suspect bit her ear.  An investigation is ongoing.

Two Rhode Island Residents Dead After Crash In Boston

Two Rhode Island residents are dead after a car accident in Boston.  Brian Arcand and Rebecca Smith were killed Saturday night after their car plunged into the Charles River.  It is unknown which victim was driving, but the person ran a red light, hit an SUV and lost control of the car.  The driver of the SUV and her passenger were uninjured.

 

Police Searching For Man Who Threatened Former Girlfriend

Police are searching for a Providence man who is accused of ramming into his ex-girlfriend's car and threatening her with a knife.  Reports came in early Saturday morning after two women said they were driving on Elmwood Avenue when Jose Rodriguez rear-ended their car, backed up and then hit them two more times.  Rodriguez is also accused of pulling out a pocket knife and holding it to the woman's neck and threatening to kill her if she called 911.  Anyone with information about the suspect's whereabouts is urged to call police.

Man Accused Of Inappropriate Relationship With Young Girl

A Rhode Island man, who is accused of arranging to meet up with a 12-year-old California girl, is expected to appear in court today.  Prosecutors say Joel Rivera started talking to the girl in August through a chat app.  Rivera allegedly share inappropriate pictures with the child on multiple occasions.  The suspect is being flown from Rhode Island to California to be arraigned.  If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison.

Providence To Hold New Years Eve Ball

Providence is holding a grand ball on New Year's Eve.  It will be held until three a.m. New Year's day at the Rhode Island Convention Center.  Mayor Jorge Elorza says he hopes the family-friendly event will become a new annual tradition. 

Warwick House Connected To Ongoing Investigation

Police say a house in Warwick is connected to the disappearance of a Cranston man.  The State Police mobile crime lab was at the house in the Conimicut neighborhood this morning.  Police say it's part of an investigation by Rhode Island and Massachusetts State Police into the whereabouts of  Kerry Mello.  He was last seen in early August.   

RI Senator Backs Bill To Boost Social Security

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is among several senators introducing a bill to boost Social Security benefits.  The legislation is in response to last month's announcement there will be a zero cost-of-living adjustment in 2016.  Other New England Senator supporting the SAVE Benefits Act include Warren and Markey of Massachusetts, Blumenthal and Murphy of Connecticut and Sanders of Vermont.

Safety Issues At Providence Church Leads To Closure

An historic church in Providence is shutting its doors for good citing safety issues.  Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Federal Hill neighborhood will lock up after this Sunday due to mold, asbestos, a leaky roof and lack of running water.  The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence ruled that the one-point-seven-million dollars that it would cost to fix the church is out of its budget.  Churchgoers are urged to start attending mass at Holy Ghost Church on Atwells Avenue.

Cranston Lands On List Of Best Places To Live In The U.S.

Cranston is one of the best places to live in the U.S.  The list from "24/7 Wall St." ranked Cranston in 41st place based on the air quality, public transit and safety.  It was also touted for having good libraries and sports clubs.  The median home value is a little over 200-thousand dollars.  The rankings were based on several factors including climate, culture and quality of school.

Providence Bank Robbed, No Arrests

Police are investigating a bank robbery in Providence.  Someone walked into the Citizen Bank near Waterman Avenue and Brook Street yesterday afternoon and demanded money.  The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.  Police hadn't released a description of the robber as of yesterday afternoon.  No additional information has been released.

Makeover Coming To Rhode Island Mall In Warwick

The Rhode Island Mall is getting a facelift.  Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian said yesterday that preparations are being made to tear down the current site and build a new retail space.  The demolition would take about three months, but city officials are working to get a permit in place.  Burlington Stores is one of the tenants expected to move into the shopping center next fall.

Rhode Island In Danger Of Losing One of Two House Seats

Rhode Island is "very likely" to lose one of its two U.S. house seats.  That's the word from a report from the University of North Carolina.  A researcher told WPRI.com that they predict after maps are redrawn in 2020, that the state will lose one of its seats based on current population trends.  The number of lawmakers in the U.S. House is based on the population size of the state, but Rhode Island hasn't seen much growth since 2010.  The state's representatives are David Cicilline and Jim Langevin.

New Executive Director Announced At Fort Adams

There's a new executive director in Fort Adams.  The "Newport Daily News" reports Joe Dias started the position on Monday, after more than 30 years of working with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.  He's replacing Richard Nagele who left the role over the summer.  Dias already has big plans regarding ways for the historic site to increase revenue.

Cox Communications To Launch Faster Internet In Providence

Faster Internet is now available in Rhode Island.  Cox Communications recently announced that it's beginning to roll out Gigablast services in Providence.  Mayor Jorge Elorza says he hopes the latest technology will attract more people to the area.  The service has also launched in other parts of the country, including Phoenix, San Diego and Las Vegas.

Man Beaten With Pipe In Rhode Island, Police Say

A man is hospitalized after being beaten with a pipe in Providence.  Police found Brent Bentsen on Tuesday suffering from injuries on his head, arms, face and fingers.  Bentsen said he was attacked by two men while trying to help an elderly woman.  The victim says he saw two men "slapping" an elderly woman and warned the suspects to stop before the fight began.  Investigators are continuing to search for the men, and Bentsen's condition is unknown.

Bail Denied For Man Accused Of Stabbing Girlfriend To Death

A Woonsocket man, who's accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death, is being held without bail.  Alvin Huggins pled not guilty in court yesterday.  Huggins is accused of killing his girlfriend at their home on Willow Street earlier this year.  Their two children were home at the time of the woman's death.  The suspect has also been ordered to have no contact with the victim's mother.  Huggins has previously spent time behind bars for assault and larceny.

Mayor Elorza Approves Executive Order To Reduce Gun Violence

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is taking steps to reduce gun violence in the area.  Elorza approved an advisory council yesterday.  The group will figure out ways to get illegal guns off the streets, as well as brainstorm ways to combat gun-related crimes.  They'll meet at least once every three months to work on an annual report.  WPRI.com reports that nine of the 13 murders this year have involved a gun.

Man Accused Of Posing As Police Officer, Beating Teenager

A Suffolk County corrections officer is accused of beating a teenager.  Police say Jeffrey Parillo approach four teenagers in a car Sunday night who were parked by the beach.  Parillo allegedly identified himself as a police officer.  One boy questioned his occupation and was struck several times.  The victim's friends were able to hold Parillo to the ground until police arrived.  He is facing multiple charges including assault, disorderly conduct and battery.  He pled not guilty and is placed on leave.

More Information In Deadly Power Saw Accident

Public safety workers are releasing more information about a deadly power saw accident in Woonsocket.  "The Call" reports that the 67-year-old man was working on a home renovation project last month when he severed a major artery in his leg.  The man was hospitalized but died last week.  His name hasn't been released, and OSHA is looking into the incident.

Police Investigating Sexual Assault In Barrington

Police are investigating a sexual assault involving an eleven-year-old Barrington girl.  The incident took place in October, but the victim's mother just recently reported it to police.  Little information is known, but a police spokesperson said the attack took place on the East Bay Bike Path and the victim and suspect know each other.  Officers are working to identify a male teenager.  Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call police.

Police: Man Dead After Dirt Biking Crash

A Westerly man is dead after a dirt bike accident in Richmond.  Police say Cory Ellis was riding on Old Mountain Trail Sunday when he crashed into a wooded ditch.  The 21-year-old victim was taken to the hospital where he died.  According to the man's friends, Ellis lost control of his dirt bike while riding down a winding hill.  He was wearing a helmet at the time.

Fall River Mayoral Upset

The mayor of Fall River is out, after less than a year in office.  City Councilor Jasiel Correia the Second has defeated Mayor Sam Sutter, in a stunning upset.  The unofficial vote total has Correia winning by less than 700 votes.  Sutter had won office in a special election less than a year ago.

 

Rhode Island Law Students To Help Disabled Veterans Free Of Charge

Rhode Island law students are teaming up with a Providence-based law firm to give legal help to veterans.  Roger Williams University School of Law and Chisholm, Chisholm and Kilpatrick made the announcement yesterday.  The students will work on appeals with veterans who have been denied disability benefits.  A spokesperson for the school says there's no group more deserving of their free service.

Police: Attempted Robber Stabbed In Providence

A man who attempted to break into a Providence home is hospitalized after suffering a stab wound.  The victim, who lives on Atwells Avenue, called police Sunday night to say a man attempted to climb into his window.  Police searched the area and found Lewis Martinez suffering a stab wound.  The homeowner identified Martinez as the burglar.  The suspect wouldn't tell police who stabbed him and an investigation is ongoing.

Hearing Regarding Providence Bar Underway

A hearing is underway regarding the fate of a Providence bar where a triple shooting recently occurred.  The Board of Licenses heard from multiple people yesterday who witnessed the shooting at El Tiburon last month.  Police say an altercation between two men led to the shooting, and two women were also injured nearby.  The licenses board is considering citing the owner.  The liquor license is also temporarily suspended.  Police haven't been able to locate the accused shooter Michael Stokes.  The hearing will continue on Thursday.

Escaped Goats Show Up At Richmond Town Hall

Three goats are safely back at home after showing up on the lawn of Richmond Town Hall.  The "Westerly Sun" reports the three animals escaped from their home and followed a person to the town hall yesterday morning.  The owner caught wind of the ordeal and brought them home.  A town spokeswoman says it isn't the first time the bizarre incident has happened.  In the past, they've had cows and horses run through the area.

Providence Group Wants High-Ranking Black Police Officer

A group in Providence is calling for Mayor Jorge O. Elorza to appoint a Black police officer to the department's command staff.  Pegged as the "Black Major Movement," dozens of people showed up to City Hall yesterday to ask for a black officer to be ranked above a sergeant.  In a recent statement, Mayor Elorza said he believes the department's leadership should reflect its diverse community and that he is committed to supporting all officers of color.

Average weekly Rhode Island gas prices fall again

Gas prices in Rhode Island have fallen again and are down to an average $2.14 per gallon for regular unleaded.

A weekly survey conducted by AAA Northeast on Monday finds the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded fell 3 cents from last week.

The Rhode Island average is 5 cents less than the national average of $2.19 per gallon.

It's also 96 cents lower than at this same time last year, when the average price was $3.10 per gallon.

AAA's Lloyd Albert says prices are expected to continue to fall as the year ends.

The lowest average price for gas this year in Rhode Island was $2.08 per gallon in February.

Dog Attacks Man In Fall River

 A man is hospitalized after being attacked by a dog in Fall River.  Police were called to a home last week after receiving reports that a man suffered from multiple dog bites all over his body.  Police documents reveal that blood was seen in the walls, floor and furniture throughout the home.  The owner told investigators that she was cleaning the dog's cage when it became aggressive with the victim.  The dog is now in the custody of animal control and the victim is in stable condition.

Man Arrested For Gun Possesion And Assault

A man is accused of bringing an unlicensed gun to a Providence bar and becoming violent with police after being arrested.  Officers were called to the Vault Lounge early Sunday morning after Frank Rodriguez flashed a gun during an altercation.  Police allegedly found the loaded handgun underneath the driver's seat of a car.  While in custody, Rodriguez is also accused of attacking an officer.  He is facing several charges including resisting arrest, possession of a firearm and assault on a detention officer.

Man Stabbed Outside Of Providence Convenience Store

A man is hospitalized stemming from a stabbing outside of a Providence convenience store.  Police were called to a 7-Eleven near Cranston Street and Potters Avenue after receiving 9-1-1 reports Saturday night.  A woman told officers that she and two friends were walking in the area when a man and woman grabbed Andrew Tavares and stabbed him twice in the chest.  Hospital officials say he remains in serious condition.  The female suspect was later identified as Ashley Goodhart and was arrested.  So far the man involved isn't in custody.

Michael Sepe Is Running For Cranston Mayor

There's a new person in the running for Cranston mayor.  Michael Sepe, chairman of the Democratic City Committee, announced Sunday that he plans to run against three-term Mayor Allan Fung next year.  Sepe, a Knightsville resident, served on the City Council in the 1980s and 1990s.  He first ran for mayor in 1994 but lost.

Man Accused Of Punching Security Officer, Arrested

A Massachusetts man is behind bars after allegedly attacking a security guard at Johnson and Wales University in Providence.  The security guard stopped Thomas Woods early Sunday morning near Pine and Page streets.  When the man approached Woods' car, the suspect allegedly yelled, quote, "I hate cops," and punched him in the face.  Woods was pepper-sprayed and arrested.  He isn't a student at the school.
