>>Town Council Adopts Flag Policy Supporting Pride, Juneteenth

(South Kingstown, RI)  --  A Rhode Island town is clarifying what can be hoisted up on the municipal flagpole.  The Independent reports the South Kingstown Town Council adopted a policy earlier this month which allows for, among other things, flags promoting social movements.  There are specific clauses for the Pride and Juneteenth flags.  Legal challenges were brought earlier this year to the city of Boston by groups wanting to fly flags in support of Christianity and Satanism.  The Martha's Vineyard town of Oak Bluffs agreed to the NAACP's request to fly a Pride flag at a park this month, but the town board is now getting flak for refusing to consider a request to fly the Juneteenth banner.

>>Civics Education Task Force Formed

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Department of Education is starting a task force dedicated to the issue of teaching civics to students.  A group of about a dozen students filed a federal lawsuit in 2018, arguing their constitutional rights were being violated.  While the federal suit was ultimately unsuccessful, The Providence Journal reports the plaintiffs worked further with the state education department on the issue.  Among the objectives of the task force is to study whether to add a half-credit course in civics for eighth grade and high school.

>>Lara Montecalvo Nomination Advances

(Washington, DC)  --  Rhode Island public defender Lara Montecalvo is one step away from a seat in the federal appeals court system.  The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee last week approved Montecalvo's nomination by a 12-to-10 vote.  Reuters reports Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa questioned Montecalvo about her role in advocating early during the coronavirus pandemic for the release of inmates to reduce health risks at the ACI.  The nomination now goes to the full Senate for consideration.

>>Delayed 6-10 Closure Happening This Weekend

(Providence, RI)  --  Work is taking place on the 6-10 Connector in Providence this weekend.  A spokesperson for the RI Department of Transportation tells The Providence Journal the work was delayed two weeks because of logistics with contractors.  Drivers who use Route 10 north are being encouraged to use alternate routes as a partial closure is expected to cause backups.

>>More Housing Money Pledged

(Providence, RI)  --  Rhode Island's housing stock is set to increase.  Governor Dan McKee and RI Housing are announcing an investment of eighty-million dollars, which is on top of 250-million that has been included in this year's state budget from the American Rescue Plan Act.  Governor McKee says the additional money will be used to create and preserve nearly nine-hundred homes across the state, most of which will be affordable housing.  His office says it is coming from a combination of state and federal resources.

>>Prov Schools Must Provide Better ESL Instruction

(Providence, RI)  --  The state of Rhode Island is being found to have violated the rights of English language-learning school students.  The ACLU says Superior Court Judge Netti Vogel has ordered the Department of Education to provide compensatory services such as tutoring.  The Department of Justice concluded in 2018 that a model used by the Providence School District of regular teachers consulting with ESL teachers for instruction was inadequate.  The ACLU sued after it says RIDE and the Council of Elementary and Secondary Education refused to implement a new system.

Rhode Island News Summary

(Undated)  --  Here is the latest news: The Rhode Island legislature had advanced several pieces of gun control legislation.  An RI man convicted for a fatal road rage shooting has been sentenced to life in prison.  The New England Patriots are announcing the dates for their 2022 training camp.

[[ watch for updates ]]

>>Gun Bills Go To Rhode Island Governor

(Providence, RI)  --  A controversial piece of gun control legislation has been maneuvered through the Rhode Island General Assembly.  The state Senate Judiciary Committee defeated a bill on a 6-6 tie Tuesday that banned high-capacity magazines, which represented a short-lived victory for Second Amendment rights advocates.  WPRI-TV reports Senate leaders sent the House version of the same bill directly to the full chamber floor, and it was cleared to the governor's desk from there.  The limited-ammunition bill also generated the most debate when it was considered in the RI House of Representatives on Friday.  Existing owners of magazines which can hold more than ten rounds would have six months to get rid of them if the bill becomes law.  The Senate also passed proposals to raise the legal firearm-purchasing age to 21 and to prohibit open-carry of loaded rifles and shotguns.

>>Life In Prison For Pawtucket Homicide

(Providence, RI)  --  A convicted road-rage murderer is being sentenced to life in prison.  The Rhode Island Attorney General's Office says 23-year-old Jairo Esdel Galva of Central Falls will serve the time for the fatal shooting of Joel Rosario, who was also from C.F.  Rosario was celebrating his 22nd birthday with friends on Halloween in 2020.  Witness testimony indicated Galva flashed his high beams at the group when they were at Lonsdale and Mineral Spring Avenues in Pawtucket.  Prosecutors say Rosario confronted Galva on his passenger-side window, then Galva shot him and drove away.

>>Man Sentenced For Recruiting Homeless For Check-Cashing Scheme

(Providence, RI)  --  A federal prison sentence is being handed down for a bank fraud scheme that exploited homeless people living in the Providence area.  The Justice Department says Jalen Stanford of Riverdale, Georgia will serve two years behind bars.  According to the DOJ, Stanford solicited, transported and paid individuals to cash hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of counterfeit business checks throughout New England.

>>Coronavirus Death Toll In Rhode Island: 3,594

(Providence, RI)  --  Rhode Island reported three new coronavirus deaths on Tuesday.  The pandemic death toll in the Ocean State increased to three-thousand-594.  There were less than two-hundred new virus cases.  The COVID patient count in Rhode Island hospitals is remaining below one-hundred.

>>Patriots Announce Training Camp Dates

(Foxboro, MA)  --  The New England Patriots are announcing training camp dates.  The team will report on Tuesday, July 26th.  Open-to-the-public training sessions and practices will run from Wednesday the 27th to Saturday the 30th.  Times will be updated on the team website.  New England begins the preseason at home against the New York Giants on August 11th.

>>Bruce Cassidy Hired As Golden Knights Head Coach

(Las Vegas, NV)  --  Former Providence and Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy has been hired as the new head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights.  Cassidy, who was with the Bruins organizations for 14 years, was fired earlier this month on the heels of a third-straight early-round playoff exit for Boston.  Cassidy is the third coach in Vegas team history.

>>Priest Buried Outside Church To Be Exhumed

(Cumberland, RI)  --  The remains of a Catholic priest in Rhode Island which have been buried at the front of the now-closed church will have to be exhumed so that the building can be sold for an affordable housing development.  That's according to a report from the Valley Breeze on the status of St. Patrick Church in Cumberland.  The Reverend Hugh O'Reilly, who served as the third pastor of the parish, was buried on the front lawn in 1872 behind a stone monument.  The rector of the parish that St. Patrick's merged with says O'Reilly's remains will be transferred to Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  The sale of the church is expected to be finalized by the end of the summer.

>>Gun Control Bills Clear One Rhode Island Legislative Chamber

(Providence, RI)  --  Gun control legislation is advancing in Rhode Island while action on the issue is being taken in the background in Washington, DC.  The RI House of Representatives approved three bills on Friday.  One of the bills bans large-capacity gun magazines, limiting the ammunition to ten rounds.  Attempts to grandfather in existing owners were voted down, with Attorney General Peter Neronha warning lawmakers that any such clause would make the law unenforceable.  The House also approved raising the age to purchase all types of firearms, not just handguns, to 21.  The third bill would ban the open carrying of loaded shotguns and rifles.  All three measures have been moved to the state Senate for a committee review on Tuesday.

>>Gun Control Bills Advance

(Providence, RI)  --  Three gun control bills are going to the Rhode Island House floor on Friday.  The Judiciary Committee considered legislation on Thursday that would do the following: limit semi-automatic magazines to ten rounds of ammunition, ban the carrying of loaded rifles or shotguns in public, and increase the legal gun-buying age from 18 to 21.  The committee's vote yesterday on the magazine capacity bill was 10-to-8.  A large number of Second Amendment supporters rallied at the State House while the hearing was ongoing.

>>Car Tax Meets End Of The Road Early

(Providence, RI)  --  Rhode Island lawmakers decided several years ago to get rid of the state's unpopular motor vehicle tax.  The car tax was originally supposed to end next year, but the state legislature says it can afford to permanently park it now thanks to a budget surplus of nearly one-billion dollars.  The proposed budget also removes the eight-dollar fee to replace license plates with a new design that was chosen this past spring.

>>First Case Of Monkeypox Identified In Rhode Island

(Providence, RI)  --  Rhode Island has identified its first probable case of monkeypox in the ongoing outbreak of the viral disease.  The case involves a male patient in his thirties who is from Providence County.  He is hospitalized and said to be in good condition.  Officials say the case is believed to be related to traveling to Massachusetts.  RIDOH is conducting contact-tracing.  Interim health department director James McDonald says monkeypox remains low-risk for Rhode Islanders, and a vaccine is available.

>>Governor Signs Rhode Island Voting Law

(Providence, RI)  --  Changes to Rhode Island's voting law that were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic are being made permanent.  Governor Dan McKee signed the "Let RI Vote Act" on Wednesday.  People can now fill out mail ballot applications online.  Any voter can use a mail ballot or emergency mail ballot without needing an excuse why they can't visit their polling location.  A requirement to have the ballots be signed by either two witnesses or get notarized has been removed.  Instead, the governor's office says signatures will be certified using a four-tier verification process.  Every Rhode Island city and town must provide at least one drop box through the closing of polls.  McKee says the act makes voting in Rhode Island easier, safer and more secure.

>>Cloud Hanging Over New Pawtucket Soccer Stadium

(Pawtucket, RI)  --  Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien [[ GREB-ee-in ]] is pleading with the state to provide additional funding for a professional soccer stadium.  The developer of the Tidewater Landing project says the cost has gone up because of inflation and supply-chain issues.  The public-private partnership is requesting an additional thirty-million dollars in public funding to match the developer's new pledge.  The Pawtucket Red Sox announced their move to Worcester in 2018 after failing to reach a new stadium deal with the RI General Assembly.  Legislation was passed one year later creating a tax increment financing district in Pawtucket to attract projects like the soccer field.  The Commerce Corporation is now being asked to increase the TIF district amount.

>>School Locked Down After Bullets Found On Campus

>>Drivers Advised About Work On 6-10 Connector

(Providence, RI)  --  RIDOT is planning a closure within the 6-10 Connector in Providence next weekend, June 17th through the 20th.  The affected highway section is Route 10 north where it meets Route 6.  Delays are likely and drivers are being encouraged to use alternate routes.  Route 10 north will be newly-paved when it re-opens on Monday the 20th.  The Department of Transportation says the 6-10 Interchange Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

(Undated)  --  Here is the latest news: State-run COVID testing and vaccination sites are closing in Rhode Island at the end of the month.  An RI official is on leave and accused of illegal online activity.  Providence voters approve a proposal to shore up the capital city's pension system.

>>State Closing COVID-19 Testing And Vax Sites

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Department of Health is winding down its COVID-19 pandemic efforts.  RIDOH says it is shifting to an "endemic strategy" for vaccination and testing.  State-supported sites are closing at the end of this month.  Test results and shots are widely available at traditional healthcare partner sites.  The state says it is prepared to make the services available again if the virus becomes more severe.

>>Coronavirus Death Toll In Rhode Island: 3,584

(Providence, RI)  --  Rhode Island reported one new coronavirus death on Tuesday.  The pandemic death toll in the Ocean State increased to three-thousand-584.  The number of new virus cases in yesterday's update was two-hundred-34.

>>Fatal House Fire Caused By Smoking

(Charlestown, RI)  --  The cause of a fatal house fire in Rhode Island is being determined.  WJAR-TV reports the state fire marshal's office has ruled a fire at an address on Ross Hill Road in Charlestown on May 28th was caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.  According to Channel 10, the fire claimed the life of 66-year-old Stanley Johnson.

[[ note nature ]]

>>Health Department Manager Facing Charges

(Wakefield, RI)  --  A Rhode Island official is facing a charge of child pornography possession.  Forty-six-year-old Jeffrey Hill of South Kingstown has been arraigned in South County District Court and released on bail.  Reports indicate Hill worked as a youth suicide prevention project manager at the state health department, and that he has been placed on leave.

>>Sentence Handed Down For Liquor Store Robbery

(Fall River, MA)  --  A southeast Massachusetts man is being sentenced for a violent armed robbery at a package store.  The Bristol Massachusetts District Attorney says 23-year-old Billy Morris of Taunton and New Bedford got five-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty last week.  Prosecutors say Morris and a juvenile suspect robbed Eagan's Liquor Store in Taunton in 2017.  The juvenile, who was not identified, is serving a five-to-seven-year sentence for firing a sawed-off shotgun and injuring the store's co-owner.

>>Providence Election Passes Pension Bond Question

(Providence, RI)  --  Providence voters approved a 515-million-dollar pension obligation bond at a special election on Tuesday.  Only four-percent of the city's voters turned out for the election.  The Rhode Island General Assembly has approved the bond in one chamber so far.  Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza proposed the spending since the city currently has an unfunded pension liability of more than one-billion dollars.

>>Celtics Host Warriors For NBA Finals Game 3

(Boston, MA)  --  The NBA Finals resume on Wednesday night.  The Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors are tied at one in the best-of-seven series.  T.D. Garden has not been quite the home court advantage the Celtics were hoping for this postseason, as they have only won five and lost four.  But that hasn't stopped demand for tickets to tonight's game.  The cheapest price for seats still available is a thousand bucks.  Tip-off is at 9 p.m.
