Did you know?

Rhode Island’s warming water temperatures are causing a biomass metamorphosis that is transforming the state’s commercial and recreational fishing industries, for both better and worse.

Iconic species are disappearing (winter flounder, cod and lobsters), southerly species are appearing more frequently (spot and ocean sunfish) and more unwanted guests are arriving (jellyfish that have an appetite for fish larvae and, in the summer, lionfish, a venomous and fast-reproducing fish with a voracious appetite).

Rhode Island News Summary

(Undated)  --  Here is the latest news: A teen is injured after being struck by a flying tire in Cranston.  The Woonsocket City Council agrees to hold off on a resolution calling for the removal of Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt from office.  Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is seeking a second doctor's opinion after he was injured in New England's home opener.

>>Girl Injured After Being Struck By Tire In Cranston

(Cranston, RI)  --  A thirteen-year-old girl reportedly suffered serious injuries, including a concussion, when she was hit by a rogue tire in Cranston on Tuesday.  A pickup truck reportedly lost the tire while it was being driven on Dyer Avenue.  Police say the teen was crossing the street when they were struck.  The girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital.  Neither speed nor alcohol/drug impairment from the pickup driver are suspected as factors.

>>Ex-Cranston Officer Drops Appeal Of Assault Verdict

(Cranston, RI)  --  A former Cranston policeman will not appeal his conviction on an assault charge.  Andrew Leonard is being ordered to serve one year of probation and to not have any contact with the victim after pleading no contest in Superior Court on Monday.  Prosecutors said Leonard used excessive force when he assaulted a suspect from a domestic incident at the Cranston police headquarters in March 2020.

>>Woonsocket City Council Decision On Mayor Removal Further-Delayed

(Woonsocket, RI)  --  The Woonsocket City Council decision on whether to remove Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt from office is remaining on hold.  The mayor's attorneys requested -- and were granted -- a one-week continuance on Tuesday night for the purpose of gathering more information.  The Rhode Island Supreme Court had put a temporary pause on the City Council action earlier this month.  Baldelli-Hunt calls a city councilor's complaint that she's not fulfilling the duties of her office a political attack.

>>Mac Jones Seeking Second Opinion On Injured Ankle

(Foxboro, MA)  --  Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is apparently keeping all of his options on the table.  After suffering a severe high ankle sprain during New England's loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday, Jones is seeking a second opinion.  The 24-year-old will consult with Dr. Martin O'Malley of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery.  O'Malley performed ankle surgery on ex-Patriots cornerback JC Jackson earlier this year.

>>RIDOT Completing I-95 Traffic Shift In Providence

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is moving all remaining travel lanes on Route 95 north in Providence to a newly-built viaduct bridge on Thursday night.  RIDOT shifted a single lane of traffic to the new bridge earlier this month.  Northbound drivers should stay far-right for access to the State Offices exit.  Traffic from the Atwells Avenue on-ramp will start running onto the viaduct bridge in October.

>>McKee Criticizes Kalus For Wrong Pronunciation Of Pawtucket

(Pawtucket, RI)  --  The pronunciation of a Rhode Island city has become the latest fodder for the governor's campaign.  Republican candidate Ashley Kalus [[ CAY-liss ]] had to re-release a TV ad on Tuesday because the original version pronounced the "paw" in Pawtucket.  The McKee campaign said Kalus, a businesswoman who moved to Rhode Island last year, does not know the state.  Speaking to reporters yesterday, the incumbent Democrat also referred to Kalus as a quote-unquote "seagull manager".

Rhode Island News Summary

(Undated)  --  Here is the latest news: The state Department of Children, Youth and Families says maltreatment caused a child's death in Providence.  New details about what led up to a car crashing into the Seekonk River.  A new report indicates Patriots quarterback Mac Jones could be facing surgery.

>>State Says Maltreatment A Factor In Child's Death In Providence

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families says maltreatment was a factor in the death of an infant in Providence over the summer.  WJAR-TV reported a child was found unresponsive in a bathtub on August 6th at Admiral Terrace Apartments.  The DCYF has forwarded a report to the Office of the Child Advocate.

>>Standoff, Shooting Incidents In Central Falls

(Central Falls, RI)  --  The peace was disturbed multiple times in Central Falls on Monday.  A standoff that began around 4:30 p.m. ended with one person in custody just after 9:00 last night at a home on Tremont Street.  WPRI-TV reports neighbors were evacuated during the standoff.  At the same time, two men reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting near the basketball courts on Higginson Avenue.  Police are investigating, but they say the two incidents are unrelated.

>>Man Sought After Car Driven Into Seekonk River

(Providence, RI)  --  There are new details about the car-into-the-water incident that happened in Providence over the weekend.  A driver reportedly went off a boat ramp into the Seekonk River on Sunday morning from Gano Street in the city's Fox Point section.  According to WLNE-TV, a woman was on a date with a man she met on the app "Plenty of Fish".  She told police the man became angry with her, and drove his car into the water.  The woman said she swam to safety, while the man was seen on surveillance fleeing the scene.  The woman was treated for minor injuries at Rhode Island Hospital.

>>Report: Mac Jones Could Have Surgery

(Foxboro, MA)  --  The Patriots are reportedly going to be without their starting quarterback for multiple games.  According to ESPN, Mac Jones suffered a severe high ankle sprain and could potentially have surgery.  Jones and the Patriots are still discussing his options and the best way to proceed.  In a video conference from New England's facility, Jones said he's "going to take it day by day."

>>Money Problems At Central Coventry Fire District

(Coventry, RI)  --  Members of a Rhode Island fire department are temporarily working without a paycheck.  The Providence Journal reports the Central Coventry Fire District did not have enough money to meet payroll last week.  The district went through bankruptcy and reorganization a decade ago, and it has been dealing with financial issues for the past few years.  Channel 10 reports the Central Coventry Fire District board voted Monday night to accept a four-hundred-thousand-dollar loan from the neighboring Coventry Fire District, which would be paid back when tax bills are returned in November.  The fire chief says the cash could run out sooner next time since town voters rejected a proposed four-percent increase to the tax levy.

>>RIDOT Replacing Bridge Over Route 6 In Providence

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is planning to demolish a bridge in Providence this upcoming Friday and Saturday as part of a rapid replacement project.  RIDOT says the Glenbridge Avenue overpass on Route 6 will have a new bridge in place within one week.  Route 6 will be closed in both directions for the demolition.  Motorists will be detoured onto Hartford Avenue.  The Glenbridge Avenue Bridge is 53 years old and carries about 14-thousand vehicles daily.

The very first vending machine was made in Alexandria in 251 BC. It was a holy water dispenser.

Japan has more vending machines than almost anywhere else - 5 million - one vending machine for every 23 people, where they sell everything from flowers to fish. From bread to bees.

The boom of vending machines began in the 1950s with automated “fountain-style juice dispensers” installed inside office buildings to dispense a cup of juice for just 10 yen into a small paper cup. You could get a little taste of your favorite drink without needing to leave the office.

>>Rhode Island Native To Take Over As Interim Celtics Coach

>>Patriots Host Ravens In Week 3

(Foxboro, MA)  --  The New England Patriots are playing the Baltimore Ravens in their home opener on Sunday.  Kickoff from Gillette Stadium is at 1 p.m.  Pats fans may notice the absence of the stadium's iconic lighthouse near the north end zone.  That was demolished earlier this year as part of a renovation project, and the team plans to replace the original lighthouse with a taller, more prominent version.

>>No Identifications Officially Released Yet After Investigation In Woonsocket

(Woonsocket, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Medical Examiner's Office is still working to determine the identities of two bodies found Monday at the home of former Woonsocket mayor Susan Menard.  WPRI-TV reports the home belongs to Menard, according to Woonsocket police chief Thomas Oates, but he could only identify the bodies, which were found in a state of decomposition, as an elderly male and female.  There was no evidence of a crime committed.  Menard was the mayor of the city from 1995 to 2009.

>>Man Arrested For Embezzling From Providence School

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island State Police has arrested a Providence man for allegedly embezzling three-million dollars from a school.  Nathan Kaufman is accused of drawing the money into his personal account while working as the director of finance and operations at the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program.  Kaufman was employed at the UCAP school on Carpenter Street for over a decade.  He is scheduled to appear in court for a pre-arraignment next January.

>>Seekonk Wendy's Robber Sentenced To Life

(Fall River, MA)  --  A Boston man who robbed a Wendy's in Seekonk at gunpoint has been sentenced to life in prison.  The Bristol District Attorney says 61-year-old Todd Johnson was convicted of armed and masked robbery and kidnapping, with a sentencing enhancement for being a habitual criminal.  Johnson tried to restrain a Wendy's worker with zip ties inside the restaurant on Route 6 in March of 2018.  The worker scared off the assailant by saying something about the alarms in the store.  Johnson was later found hiding underneath a car at Stateline Auto in East Providence.  The D.A. says he was eventually released from jail because of the pandemic, and committed another armed-and-masked robbery in Boston.

>>Cranston Library Temporarily Stops Offering Meeting Spaces After Demonstration

(Cranston, RI)  --  WPRI reports the Cranston Public Library is temporarily halting the use of meeting spaces until a review of policies is completed.  A transgender rights protest was held at one location, the William Hall Library on Broad Street Monday, over a private meeting on gender teachings in schools.  Library director Edward Garcia tells Channel 12 the pause will last a couple of weeks.

>>Rhode Island Kids Count Executive Director Leaving

(Providence, RI)  --  The only director in the history of the nonprofit child advocacy group Rhode Island Kids Count is planning to step down.  Elizabeth Burke Bryant has held the position for nearly three decades.  The board chair of RI Kids Count says Bryant has been one of the great champions in the Ocean State for the wellbeing of children and their families.  A search for a successor is underway.

>>Richard Hatch Could Lose RI Homes Due To Back Taxes

(Newport, RI)  --  The original winner of the reality show Survivor may lose his properties in Newport.  The Providence Journal reports Richard Hatch is on the hook for nearly three-million dollars in back taxes, including a million dollars from the contest he won in 2000.  The newspaper reports Hatch allegedly transferred the two Newport homes to his sister in a fraudulent manner to thwart the government and his other creditors.  The 61-year-old Hatch spent about four years in prison for tax evasion in the late-2000s.

Don't wear white after Labor Day! (even though the last day of summer is technically September 21st).

The tradition began back in the 1800s, as a way to use fashion to separate those with money from those without - those who needed to work from those who didn't.

?

When summer was over, affluent residents would leave the city for warmer vacation spots. Wearing white represented that you could afford to get out of the city and vacation elsewhere when summer ended.
