Benefit Street on the East Side of Providence was created in the mid-18th century “for the benefit of all”. From its origins as a back lane through farm country, this colonial thoroughfare boasts one of the most extensive collections of 18th and 19th century urban architecture in the country. When hard economic times brought neglect, and urban renewal threatened to raze the district in the 1950s, noted preservationists like Antoinette Downing worked tirelessly to spare it from the wrecking ball.

Rhode Island currently has greater numbers of larger and older trees than we’ve seen for more than a century. 70% of our forests are between 60 and 100 years of age, with the majority in the 60-80 year class. The number of large trees has been steadily increasing, while the smallest size class is decreasing. The increasing age and size of our forests is beneficial for some wildlife species, but the extent of shrubby young forest habitat decreasing puts many species which require young forest habitat now at risk.

>>Bills Introduced To Help Pawtuxet River Area

(Warwick, RI)  --  Several bills were introduced on Tuesday which target a controversial industrial site in Warwick.  According to a Providence Journal report, the owners of the former Hammel Dahl valve factory property on Post Road want to build storage units, but a group of neighbors who use the nearby Pawtuxet River Trail have opposed the effort.  While the trail land is private, state Representative Joseph McNamara is proposing a bill that would permit the Department of Environmental Management to recognize and identify public rights-of-way to shoreline and water access for land owned by a private party.  Another McNamara bill would amend the definition of solid waste to include PVC pipes, which would force the removal of materials that have remained at the factory site.

>>Senator Reed Asks FTC To Review Egg Prices

(Washington, DC)  --  Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed is requesting that the Federal Trade Commission investigate potential price-gouging linked to the increase in egg prices.  In the letter sent Tuesday, Reed said price-gouging and other deceptive practices by the country's largest egg companies appear to be contributing to cost increases for American consumers.  The industry has blamed last year's avian flu outbreak, but Reed points to Department of Agriculture research which indicates the price hikes have been much larger in scale than the decreases in production.

>>Patriots Bringing Back Bill O'Brien

(Foxboro, MA)  --  ESPN reports the New England Patriots are hiring Bill O'Brien as offensive coordinator.  O'Brien was the Patriots offensive coordinator in 2011.  He spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at the University of Alabama, the alma mater of Mac Jones.  O'Brien's resume also includes head coach of the Houston Texans and Penn State.

Drones help run the nation's railroads. In order to run a safe railroad, tracks must be in good shape. Drones help get the job done. They do so by flying over rail yards and around bridges, allowing ground-penetrating radar and wayside sensors to identify possible track defects. Locomotives equipped with Positive Train Control (PTC) systems have on-board computer software that automatically stops a train in certain instances to reduce specific types of human-caused errors.

The Town of Cranston was created by the General Assembly in 1754 from a portion of Providence north of the Pawtuxet River. Historians debate whether the town was named after Governor, Samuel Cranston, the longest-serving Rhode Island governor, or his grandson, Thomas Cranston, who was serving as Speaker of the RI House of Representatives at the time that the town was created.

In the early 1770s town meetings were held at the taverns of Caleb Arnold and Nehemiah Knight where Cranstonians voted to oppose British Parliament and support the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. After losing much of its territory to neighboring towns and the city of Providence over the nineteenth century, Cranston itself became a city on 10 March 1910.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born Michael King, Jr. In 1934, after King Sr. attended an international Baptist conference in Germany where he became inspired by the teachings of 16th-century religious thinker Martin Luther, he changed both his name and his son's. At the time, Dr. King was already 5 years old, so he remained "Mike" to his closest friends and family for the rest of his life.

Cocktails have been traced back to before the Revolution. Many of those Rhode Island Colonists that burnt the Gaspee in 1772 were involved in rum and gin distilling and smuggling. The usual drinks were punches, cobblers, toddies, slings, bounces, juleps, snagarees, and flip.

?The common ingredients were gin, brandy, Medford (dark) rum, port wine (sack), bourbon, rye, and bitters. Cobblers are of American origin and are great favorites in all warm climates. Hot drinks included hot buttered rum, Tom & Jerry, hot brandy sling with nutmeg, and the Mulls including mulled cider, and hot applejack.

One of the first union suits for women was patented in 1868, and called the “emancipation union under flannel.”

The garment combined a knit flannel shirt and pants into one piece. The long pants extended to the ankle, nixing the need for long stockings and garters, and later versions would have rows of buttons at the waist to help suspend several layers of skirts, discouraging the use of heavy petticoats that often weighed upwards of 15 pounds.

It “emancipated” women from the pinching confines of the corset. It was found most popular with a feminist audience - to begin with.
